Zusammenfassung: | "The exhibition Tendenzen: Neuere Architektur im Tessin (Zurich 1975) signalled the emergence of Ticinese architecture on the international scene, while unintentionally cementing its association with the Italian Tendenza. In particular, curator Martin Steinmann suppressed the regional specificities of Ticino to re-frame the production as an illustration of architectural autonomy. His interpretation led to a wider understanding of Ticinese architecture as a transferable design method, contributing to a profound shift in the historiography of Swiss architecture. This chapter maps out the theoretical legitimisation of Ticinese architecture in the framework of the Tendenzen exhibition, and its effects on subsequent German-Swiss design practice in the 1980s and 1990s. Based on new archival and oral history materials, it argues that Steinmann’s sophisticated reading created a universalizing narrative, which by being detached from historical and cultural conditions could claim its own theoretical autonomy." |
