Zusammenfassung: | This chapter focuses on the career achievements and networks of the artist and copper plate engraver, Maria Sibylla Merian. During her lifetime, she not only experienced some of her major achievements as an entrepreneur, but the impact of her endeavours on subsequent generations is far more profound than she could have imagined. More recently, researchers are examining Merian’s printed works and drawings that illustrate different plant species and the development stages of insects, as well as her collection of Surinamese insects. This chapter examines her life, work and contributions to the art and science of collecting and natural history. Schmidt-Loske introduces a recently found letter, dating 1724, that includes a list of thirty-seven painted works by Maria Sibylla listed for sale, and suggests how it will open up new avenues for research. |
