Zusammenfassung: | Early in the 18th century, new decorative motifs emerge inspired by nature, the sea, or the distant East. Among them, the figure of the dragon appears via prints and the first Jesuit books on Chinese customs but is detached from its original meaning, spreading and adapting to a new and different artistic universe. From « monstrous snake » for Furetière it becomes a « fabulous animal » for Michon, and soon leaves a context of heresy for the world of storytelling. In this article we use the cultural transfer paradigm to analyse the role of engravings in the migration and evolution of the dragon motif between the Far East and France, with particular emphasis on its appropriation by finance circles whose members are ever on the lookout for new visual references distinct from royal vocabulary. |
