Initially built as a passenger aircraft for Deutsche Lufthansa, its first military deployment came in South America in the Chaco War, but in German hands, the aircraft was first blooded in the Spanish Civil War, where it was pressed into service as a crude, but effective bomber. From then on the Luftwaffe deployed the 'Tante Ju' across Western Europe, the Mediterranean and the East, carrying freight, dropping paratroops and airlifting wounded personnel, often operating in the most hostile conditions, confronting freezing temperatures and ice, or heat and dust.
