Zusammenfassung: | The deeper issue addressed by the many historians gathered at this conference concerns the creation and continuance of the Church of England as an established, national, state church in a liberal, humanist, multicultural and secular world. This volume makes a powerful case from a Christian perspective for the continued establishment of the Church of England, though it compels both church and state to confront issues each would rather ignore. Three central issues dominate the discussion: the monarchy and the role of the monarch as Defender of the Faith; implications for the churches of the reform of the House of Lords; and gender- and sexual-equality and the question of the consecration of female and gay priests to the episcopate. It asks a number of penetrating questions, including the key issue of the extent to which churches, and particularly the Church of England, can be protected from equality legislation, while at the same time expecting to have special political and social privileges |
