Zusammenfassung: | "In this study of the moral principles that profoundly influenced the thinking of Abraham Lincoln, Cambridge historian Allen Jayne argues persuasively that Lincoln regarded the Declaration of Independence as the American Manifesto. To Lincoln, that Manifesto of 1776 mandated the abolition of slavery with its ideals of God-given individual liberty and government created to protect that liberty. He stated this again and again in his speeches. The Declaration thereby became the script that Lincoln followed in his struggle to preserve the Union and extend individual liberties to African Americans. "Lincoln and the American Manifesto also explains why Thomas Jefferson made the reason-based "Nature's God" of deism, not the revelation-based Judeo-Christian God, the basis of the political and moral philosophy of the Declaration of Independence - the nation's founding document. Jayne thereby challenges the widely held notion that the United States was founded on biblical revelation-based Judeo-Christian morality."--BOOK JACKET |
