Zusammenfassung:"Generally, little is known about Gille, bishop of Limerick from 1106 until 1138. The Annalists have tended to ignore him and history has not focused attention on him either. Scholars accept that he was an important figure in the reformation of the Irish Church during the twelfth century but to date they have not explored his contribution to the early medieval Church in Ireland." "This work is a first attempt to focus attention on Gille. It tries to establish the foundation on which a genuine appreciation of the contribution which he made to the Ireland of the twelfth century can be laid. It provides the future historian with a critical edition of his writings and a translation of these into English. It also analyses, briefly, the backgound of his treatise and the contribution which he made, not only to the formation of the medieval Irish Church but also to specific areas of interest to the Church, the role of the laity, the place of women etc."--BOOK JACKET.
