Zusammenfassung:Both of these stories were written in Russian, and are here presented in dramatized form in English. Nikolai Gogol's “A Night with Chichikov” is an excerpt from his novel “Dead Souls", first published in 1842. Gogol (1809 - 1852) intended this work as a satire on the establishment of his time. The “souls” in the title are in fact serfs, and it is the counting of these souls for tax purposes that forms the background for this amusing story. Cast: Myron McCormick, Dorothy Greener, Gerald Hiken, Edith King, Salem Ludwig, Alice Pearce, Bernard West. Anton Chekhov's “Enemies” was published in 1887. Chekhov (1860 - 1904) is well known in the west as a playwright (“The Seagull”, “The Cherry Orchard”, “Three Sisters”, etc.), less so as a writer of short stories. In Russian literary history his stories were profoundly influential on the development of the medium. “Enemies” illustrates two aspects of Chekhov's departure from the accepted traditions of his day: a “stream of consciousness” technique and an ending without clear moral judgment.
