This volume presents the results of the "Memory of Salvation" project of the Contemporary Jewish Documentation Center (CDEC) to reflect on how they could save themselves despite searches, arrests and deportations by the Fascist and Nazi authorities. Contrary to what has already been described by Liliana Picciotto in The Book of Memory and in other studies, here is the "reverse of the medal". Nobody had previously put the question, systematically and scientifically, of who they were and why they were saved. Here are some themes: what did the Jews in Italy know about the Shoah that was already raging in Nazi Europe? And what did ordinary people know? What was the risk for a normal citizen who gave relief to the Jews? Can this relief be defined as civil resistance? Was there any difference between the rescue of Jews and that of other groups who were equally in need of going underground: anti-fascist, anti-Fascist army soldiers? |
