Zusammenfassung: | Columbia, Mo., Univ. of Missouri, Diss., 1984 Variation in electrophoretic loci, morphology, pattern, and color was examined in four populations of spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) from Missouri. No obvious sexual dimorphism was noted, though females tended to be larger than males. Variation within populations varied widely, depending on characters studied, pattern and color were most variable. Variation between populations appeared to be clinal and gene flow is apparently sufficient to allow development of such a pattern. Clinal variation could be correlated with either geography or habitat differences, the most obvious of which is moisture. The least genetic distance was between two populations from the Ozark plateau, the next between that complex and a population from the Ozark border, the greatest distance separated those three from a population in the Mississippi lowlands. Since apparent clines are geographically inconsistent with variation among populations of Ambystoma maculatum reported in the literature, the possibility of ecotypes is suggested. The species should still be considered monotypic. |
