Zusammenfassung: | How does the coordination of agricultural producers affect the structure of commodity chains? How does the embeddedness of agricultural producers in value chains influence the coordination of agricultural producers? To address these questions, this article presents evidence from a historical case study on the development of the German markets for organic food from 1946 to 2012. The study demonstrates how coordination of farmers in business associations structured both the horizontal relationships of organic farmers and the vertical embeddedness of organic farmers in value chains. In doing so, it connects theoretical approaches from economic sociology and economic geography. While the former studies the horizontal coordination of producers in a market and ask how producers avoid fierce price competition, the latter explores the vertical relationships within value chains and studies the driveness of value chains by large producers and retailers. The combination of both perspectives provides a more comprehensive understanding of the actions and strategies of producers in agricultural markets. |
