Zusammenfassung:This chapter will specifically cover the institutions surrounding the oil price and resource economics. The objective is to distance the approach taken from the resource determinism which characterizes most of the mainstream literature on the political economy of energy. The theoretical overview aims to highlight societal evolution transiting from a purely utilitarian model of resource use to more contemporary economic, commercial and sustainable development perspectives on the issue. In more general terms, it can then be argued that human understanding of resources (and hence, of the pricing of resources) cannot be disassociated from the interrelationship between technological development and evolution of thought. On these grounds, the chapter will argue that the link between the oil price and its importance in the economic development is not always linear and will accordingly suggest defining the oil price as an institution in itself.
