Zusammenfassung:Critical review of two extensive collections on Chinese economy and society from 1840 to 1949: (i) 'The modern Chinese economy: the late Ch'ing period to end of the Nanking regime, 1840-1949' in 44 volumes and (ii) 'China during the interregnum, 1911-1949 the economy and society' in 19 volumes both edited by Ramon H. Myers. According to Buck, transformation of the role of foreign states to become decisive factors in the Chinese government's economic policy since 1911 that best charaterizes the most profound set of changes that emerges from a study of the materials in Myers's 'Modern Chinese economy' and 'China during the interregnum'.
