Zusammenfassung: | Using a new method to estimate market and self-employment wages that incorporates the endogenous choice between wage market work and self-employment work, the author decomposes the earnings differentials between Malay, Chinese and Indian workers in Peninsular Malaysia. Data from the Malaysian Family Life Survey show that the measured Chinese-Malay wage gap is only to one-fourth due to an explained ethnic wage effect and almost one-half due to ethnic choice of employment activity.
