Zusammenfassung:	The article reviews the teaching of Vatican II on synodality and conciliarity and the pastoral implementation of this teaching in the decades after the Council. Special attention is given to the limitations placed on synodal and conciliar practices in the Code of Canon Law and in official teachings during the pontificates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The article closes by considering the unfinished agenda in the development of synodality and conciliarity in the church
