This is despite the fact that the first Gambian trade union was founded as long ago as 1929 and trade unions since that time have played on enduring, if intermittent, part in the affairs of the nation. This account, by tracing the growth of trade unionism from its origins in the colonial era to the present, aims to provide a comprehensive view of the Gambian labour movement.
