Zusammenfassung:Between the mid-1950s and the late 1980s the proportion of the total land area of Western Samoa which was under forest cover declined from 74 to 55 %. While the resident rural population increased by 54 % between 1956 and 1986, the area cleared of forest (excluding the lava flows) increased by 73 % over approximately the same period. Land use surveys made in the mid-1950s, late 1980s and in the 1990s are used by the author to explore the change in forest cover between mid-1950s and 1990. (DÜI-Sen)
