Beschreibung
Beschreibung:Account of the failed 1871 Polaris expedition to the North Pole by one of its survivors, the chief science officer, Emil Bessels. Under the command of Charles Francis Hall, discipline broke down early in the voyage. In October, while the ship was wintering on the coast of Greenland, Hall became ill after drinking a cup of coffee, and as his condition worsened he accused Bessel of poisoning him. Hall died in early November. The following autumn, after failing to reach the North Pole, the ship became icebound. A portion of the crew abandoned ship, while the rest remained on board. Those who remained (Bessels among them) survived the winter and in spring escaped in small boats to eventual rescue. Those who left wandered yet another year, including six months afloat on an ice island, before being rescued off Newfoundland. Reference: Arctic Bibliography, 1503; Lauridsen I, 263
