She is well known for her work in virtual environments and as co-founder of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (AbTeC), though her practice moves fluidly across the digital and physical divide. This paper examines a collection of Skawennati’s Celestial Tree sculptures—both virtual and physical—and explores how these works challenge traditional understanding of sculptural materiality and accessibility. Lead by Skawennati’s avatar "xox," I traveled to AbTeC Island and beyond, engaging with these sculptures and the worlds in which they are installed. Considering art that has been created to be experienced exclu-sively in the virtual prompted conversations on embodiment and imaginative experience, further nuanced by Skawennati’s practice of simultaneously creating in the physical realm. Furthermore, building within an immersive social virtual world introduces possibilities for community and viewer engagement unique to the post-digital period. |
