Zusammenfassung: | The stylistic restoration of the Johanneskapelle in Pürgg between 1889 and 1894 was an important project for the Imperial-Royal Central Commission. The project was influenced by various stakeholder groups with widely varying ideas about the objective of the restoration work. In the midst of these complicated relationships, painter and conservator Theophil Melicher took on a key role in the execution of the project. Working closely with those in positions of responsibility, he tried to meet the high expectations of the project. His approach was underpinned by the requirement for the paintings to be preserved for as long as possible through the use of a variety of protective treatments. Given the lack of specialist training in conservation at that time, many of the procedures and techniques adopted were experimental and had never been tested before. Lofty ideas of progress, combined with a basic lack of knowledge of materials and conservation, defined this project like no other. |
