Zusammenfassung: | Among the polygonal walls, those of Amelia are particularly interesting because they contain a large number of concave blocks. A concave stone generates in the wall system a condition of double constraint given that it comes into contact with the adjacent one on two sides instead of one. Therefore, the concave blocks represent a structural innovation that inserts in the polygonal walls, in an intentional way, as many points of constraint of a higher degree, with the result of obtaining a greater solidity of the whole wall. The extraordinary ones of Cuzco ? much more recent than the walls of Amelia and here documented together with others in Italy and in the rest of the world ? constitute an excellent demonstration of this principle. The section of the polygonal walls of Amelia designated with the letters E-F in the survey, contains two concave stones that come into contact with each other on three sides.
