Zusammenfassung: | "Carolyn Higbie uses an inscription of the first century B.C. from Lindos as the basis for a study of the ancient Greeks and their past. The first catalogues some forty objects given to Athena by figures from the mythological past (including Heracles, Helen, and Menelaus) and the historical past (including Alexander the Great, a Ptolemy, and Pyrrhus). The second catalogues three epiphanies of India to the townspeople when they were in need of her assistance. The complete inscription is here translated into English for the first time, and a commentary on the text is also provided. By drawing on anthropological approaches as well as archaeology, inscriptions, and literary evidence, this book examines what was important to the Greeks about their past, how they reconstructed it, and how they made use of it in their present. The topics examined include religious practices such as the donation of votives and ritual purification, tourism and travel, the uses of Homer and the Trojan War narrative, Persian Wars and Persian commanders, the history of Lindos and Rhodes, and memory and oral tradition."--BOOK JACKET. |
